    Shelter Nova Scotia operates 2 emergency shelters, 2 supported housing programs, 2 community residential facilities, a walk in service centre, encampment support team and a community trustee program. We are a charitable not for profit organization established in 1971. Operating 24 hours a day from 7 locations in HRM, with 130 employees and a 12 member board of directors.

  • Society of Saint Vincent de Paul – Halifax Particular Council

    The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a charitable Catholic lay organization that was established in Halifax in 1853 to serve those in need. Under the Halifax Particular Council, sixteen groups (conferences) of volunteers in Halifax and area, Bridgewater, Wolfville, Truro, and Amherst respond to assistance requests for a range of immediate needs. In addition, the Society advocates for long-term sustainable change to improve the lives of those in poverty. The Halifax Particular Council also operates two outreach ministries (Special Works): Hope Cottage, a soup kitchen, and Hand in Hand, a thrift store. Currently, it is constructing a 38-unit supportive housing project called Ozanam Place at 2445 Brunswick Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia. It will house individuals from the Halifax Regional Municipality By-Name List who are currently experiencing homelessness and is expected to be completed by March 2025.

    The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society (AAHS) seeks to break the cycle of poverty and enhance the quality of life for vulnerable individuals by providing community-supported, high-quality, affordable, and energy-efficient housing, along with tenant support services to facilitate community building. Their projects include Riverside Estates, completed in two phases (2017 and 2018), Appleseed Court (opened in 2022), and a 2-unit home donated in 2023, resulting in 28 occupied units, with plans for 17 more homes. Tenants, who come from diverse backgrounds benefit from improved financial stability, community support, security, and enhanced well-being.
