Tawaak Housing Association, established in 1981, is a private non-profit housing corporation committed to delivering suitable, adequate, and affordable housing for Aboriginal peoples with low to moderate incomes in urban areas of Nova Scotia. Owning and managing fifty-four properties comprising one hundred and forty-five units under the Urban Native Housing Program and the Private Non-Profit Housing Program, Tawaak focuses on meeting the distinct housing needs of the urban Aboriginal population. Its portfolio is mostly in Halifax and Dartmouth, with additional properties in Sydney, Truro, Antigonish, Liverpool, and Bridgewater. Supported by both the Federal Government and the Government of Nova Scotia, Tawaak Housing has significantly enhanced the quality of housing for Aboriginal communities through culturally sensitive administration and support.
- Providing affordable rental housing for urban Aboriginal peoples
- Operating supportive housing complexes for homeless Aboriginal individuals and families
- Collaborating with other Aboriginal groups and social agencies to offer access to employment, training, educational, and social opportunities
- Maintaining and improving housing stock through government-funded capital improvements
