Emphasizing the importance of intergenerational caregiving, the organization aims to provide appropriate housing and care that allows seniors and other residents to age in place, fostering a sense of security and belonging. Their vision includes inclusive, affordable housing for singles, couples, and families, promoting intergenerational living to enrich community life and support one another.

Adsum provides shelter and housing for up to 170 individuals daily and over 350 people annually at its locations. Additionally, the housing team assists hundreds more within the community, helping them secure safe and affordable housing along with continuous support services for stable housing, food, clothing, and community connections.

New Dawn is a volunteer-driven, non-profit social enterprise focused on community development. Our mission is to identify and address the needs of our community by creating and managing initiatives tailored to meet these needs.

The services we offer generate revenue, which is then reinvested into New Dawn. This reinvestment strategy enables us to launch new projects and tackle emerging community challenges, all aimed at fostering a more dynamic and self-sufficient Cape Breton Island. With a workforce of over 175 local employees, we impact the lives of 600 Cape Breton residents daily through our various companies and initiatives. Since our inception in 1976, our commitment to fostering a culture of self-reliance within the community remains steadfast and vital.

The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society (AAHS) seeks to break the cycle of poverty and enhance the quality of life for vulnerable individuals by providing community-supported, high-quality, affordable, and energy-efficient housing, along with tenant support services to facilitate community building. Their projects include Riverside Estates, completed in two phases (2017 and 2018), Appleseed Court (opened in 2022), and a 2-unit home donated in 2023, resulting in 28 occupied units, with plans for 17 more homes. Tenants, who come from diverse backgrounds benefit from improved financial stability, community support, security, and enhanced well-being.
