The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a charitable Catholic lay organization that was established in Halifax in 1853 to serve those in need. Under the Halifax Particular Council, sixteen groups (conferences) of volunteers in Halifax and area, Bridgewater, Wolfville, Truro, and Amherst respond to assistance requests for a range of immediate needs. In addition, the Society advocates for long-term sustainable change to improve the lives of those in poverty. The Halifax Particular Council also operates two outreach ministries (Special Works): Hope Cottage, a soup kitchen, and Hand in Hand, a thrift store. Currently, it is constructing a 38-unit supportive housing project called Ozanam Place at 2445 Brunswick Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia. It will house individuals from the Halifax Regional Municipality By-Name List who are currently experiencing homelessness and is expected to be completed by March 2025.
